About the Product
Kyoto "Kurotani Washi" x Kyoto "Wagasa Tsujikura"Traditional crafts protected and nurtured throughout a long history.
Kurotani Washi, from the papermaking village of Ayabe in Kyoto, is a very rare Japanese paper, each sheet crafted entirely by hand by artisans.
Characterized by its durability and longevity, it is also used for the restoration of cultural properties as it can withstand long-term preservation.
Tsujikura's skilled craftsmen have taken this rare Kurotani Unryushi (cloud dragon paper) and carefully crafted it into a Janome(Snake Eye) umbrella over a significant amount of time.
We have remained committed to authenticity, starting from the raw materials.
It possesses no outward flashiness; its simplicity is the very essence of its charm.
"Kurotani Unryushi" -Byakko (White Tiger)- An exquisite, top-tier masterpiece.
The Charms of the Umbrella - A Wagasa to be Experienced
- The shaft (handle) is made of Metake (Female Bamboo). It is smooth to the touch and fits comfortably in the hand. While "bamboo" is in its Japanese name, Metake is actually a member of the Sasa (bamboo grass) family.- When closed, the umbrella returns to the slender and beautiful form of a single piece of Madake bamboo.
- The Kozo (mulberry) fibers of the Unryu paper become translucent when held up to the light.
*Unryu paper refers to paper where long, hand-torn fibers of Kozo (mulberry) are scattered across the base paper to create cloud-like patterns.
- The color of the washi paper changes with the passage of time.
Vegetable oils such as linseed oil and perilla oil are applied for the waterproof finish. Due to the properties of these oils, the white washi paper gradually transitions from pale yellow to a flaxen hue over the years. This process of color transformation is another joy of owning this Wagasa.
- The crisp, crackling sound of the folded washi paper separating as the umbrella is opened.
- For the latch that determines the opening of the umbrella, we have used a wooden "Hajiki" (latch) instead of a metal one. The "click" of the wooden latch produces a pleasant and soothing resonance.
We deliver an exquisite masterpiece, a collaboration between "Kyoto Kurotani Washi" and "Kyoto Wagasa Tsujikura."
Kyoto, Ayabe: The Papermaking Village "Kurotani Washi"
The number of washi craftsmen has continued to decrease with the changing times, and now only a handful remain. However, they are relatively young, mostly in their 30s and 40s, and the production region is very vibrant. While preserving the traditional "Tesuki" (hand-paper-making) technique that has lasted for over 800 years, they are also moving forward with efforts to develop new products and strengthen the regional brand.Genkoku (Profound Black)
A black that is deep and quietly absorbs light."Gen" (玄) signifies a color that is profoundly deep and immeasurable.
It is not merely black, but a color with a heavy presence, as if harboring a spirit within the darkness.
Within the suppressed luster, depth emerges upon receiving a faint light.
It is a presence where silence and tension coexist.
A black that serves as the foundation to withstand power.
A color of the highest caliber, truly fitting for a special selection.
